The example below is taken from a passage in C major, it nevertheless demonstrates the potential of the German augmented sixth for modulation. The augmented sixth in the first bar sounds the same as a dominant seventh of Db major (Ab7). The passage could therefore be a modulation from Db to C which are very far apart on the circle of fifths.
